Environments

Environments are dead cool (and I’m clearly a dad from 2003).

Environment work is really complex, because it requires techniques from almost all other disciplines to make it work. From digital matte-painting to more traditional 3D, even using photogrammetry and scanned geometry to achieve incredible details on-screen.

I want to talk about some of my experiences using Houdini’s terrain tools, combined with Nuke’s fantastic projection systems, for creating environments, as well as methods I use for photogrammetry to aid in the creation of environments. Environments lend themselves to procedural thinking, so I can share a bank of ideas on how to create interesting and unique environments.
